Building the Airstream a Home

Carol and I thought owning an Airstream would be great fun. Trips to the mountains to escape the summer heat in Albuquerque, trips to the Gulf Coast in the winter, visiting family and just sightseeing.

Now that we have the Airstream, where do you store it between trips?

Leaving it out in the Albuquerque summer sun blistered the aluminum protective coating on the outside and caused the headliners to sag on the inside.

After much debate and procrastination, the Airstream garage project was finally begun.

Footings were dug and foundations framed. Extra fill was brought in to level the site.

The floor was covered with hardware cloth and rebar was laid in the footings.
It was an exciting day when the concrete trucks started arriving.
Footings were poured first then the floor.
Concrete had to be smoothed while it was still workable.
Carol inspects the new slab.
Soon the walls are put up and the sheathing applied.
The trusses were delivered and put up.
Winter arrives and work seems to stop.
Corrugated metal roof goes on.
Finally PNM arrives to connect the electric service. Another milestone!
The stucco browncoat was applied in a dust storm. Note the gray sky.
