Italy Cruise Nov. 1998

Our ship, the Norwegian Dream.
Carol in Naples with our ship and Mt. Vesuvius in the background.
Wandering around Naples just like the tourists that we are.
Herculanium and Mt. Vesuvius

Herculanium, Italy lies to the south west of the Italian volcano Mount Vesuvius. During the year 79 A.D. Mount Vesuvius erupted showering the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculanium with moltin rock and ash buring the two cities for almost 2000 years. Archeology work is still being conducted to reveal covered portions of the two cities.

Here is one of the amazingly well preserved wall mosaics.

New Mexico's Chaco Canyon was a major center of Puebloan culture between AD 850 and 1250. I used to think it was pretty amazing until I saw these ruins from about a thousand years earlier!
